What To Look For In A Gun Safe

Posted on: 15 May 2020

The first thing you need to do is assess what you need in a gun safe. If you live in a flood prone area, for example, you might want to invest in a safe that is watertight. And, in all honesty, it's hard to argue against a safe that's fire-resistant or fireproof. There are areas that are more prone to wild fires, of course, and people who live there will want to be sure to invest in a fireproof gun safe. But house fires can, unfortunately, happen to anybody. A stray lightning strike or kitchen incident is all it takes.

The next question is, what size do you get? If you only have a single handgun, they actually make gun safes for individual guns. These tend to be quicker access than your bog-standard gun safes, so even if you get a larger gun safe, it might be worth your while to get a smaller one as well. But otherwise, that depends on what kind of space you have to put a safe in and how many guns you plan to store in it. This may be something where you'll need some flexibility in your space allotment. If you have an area you can just wedge a smallish safe into but lots of guns, you're going to have to prioritize what goes into the safe and determine the best way to store the rest of your guns in a safe and secure manner.

Next, decide how quickly you need to be able to get in and out of your safe. If you live in a crime-prone area, you may want to have faster access to your guns. There are a dazzling variety of lock types for gun safes these days, including biometric and fingerprint locks. Some people might have dealt with biometric locks in the past and have been frustrated by them. Most people, by this point, have dealt with biometric or fingerprint locks at some point or another and been frustrated by them, but the tech really has come a long way. And gun safe manufacturers know that it can be frustrating. Do your research and look into the reliability, you may be surprised how far it's come.

So, to recap, you want to know what features you're looking for in the safe: fireproof, waterproof, and biometric locks. You want to know how many guns you're going to be storing in it and how large a space you have to put a safe. And you'll want to do a little research before you go out shopping for a gun safe for sale. This is an important purchase for your home; it's not something to take lightly.
